50 Shades of Grape

You may have heard about this book, Fifty Shades of Grey, which has gotten a lot of press by being banned here and there. Apparently the novel belongs to the slash-fic genre, where known literary or film or TV characters are imagined in sexual circumstances. This particular item is based on the characters in Twilight, which is why (I think) it has become the Dirty Book Everyone’s Talking About, replacing Wetlands, say, or Rainbow Party. Now I haven’t read this thing (nor Twilight nor have I seen the movie(s)) but I am bemused by people trying to ride to fame on the coattails of someone else’s lucky break. Look:

Yes, those are three wannabes. But that isn’t all:

That’s kind of funny. Then there’s:

Had enough? No? Then take a look at Caustic Cover Critic’s collection of rip-offs, there’s lots more.

I wondered how long it would take for the rip offs and parodies to start. I work in publishing and read the other day that someone had self published a parody of The Hunger Games and been given a massive book fell with a mainstream publisher. There doesn’t seem to be anything stopping people doing it as long as they avoid breaching copyright. Pity originality isn’t more prized.
